Fly ControlThe term ‘fly’ when used in relation to pest status covers a range of different species. The most widespread pest is the common housefly (Musca domestica) which is the main species found in domestic dwellings and is also commonly associated with animal production. Other significant pest species include the lesser housefly (Fannia canicularis), which is smaller than the common housefly and is commonly seen flying in erratic ‘square’ patterns in the indoor situations (usually in the middle of a room under a light fitting!) blowflies (various species) and Australian bushflies (these are the flies which are the most persistent nuisance in outdoor situations). Flies can be mechanical vectors of disease (through contamination of food material), they can affect livestock productivity (eg. milk production in dairy cows and blowfly strike in sheep), some species bite (eg. stable flies and March flies) and in some areas of the world flies can be vectors of worm diseases. In professional pest control the control of flies is primarily carried out for their nuisance status in domestic situations or in food production environments due to their potential to contaminate food stuffs.
