What is sustainable development?

Sustainable development is a commitment to living and conducting business in a way that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It is a globally accepted approach to sustaining economic growth without harming our planet or exhausting its resources, while improving the quality of life for its current and future generations. “Protecting Tomorrow…Today” is the BES vision that defines our contribution to global sustainability. It is the driving principle behind our strategic, operational and cultural activities.

It relates not only to the products and services we offer, but to the very way we, our customers and suppliers conduct business. Sustainability is not new to us. Our history of innovation, education, training and stewardship underlines our commitment to providing solutions that improve health while minimizing environmental impact.

Our position: Sustainable development is the primary driver at Bayer Environmental Science. It is a concept we have practiced informally for many years, and one that is essential to embrace as a foundation for our future. A focus on solutions:

• Health and Hygiene: Enhancing healthy living conditions by reducing the hazards associated with rodents and insects, in particular those that transmit diseases or that destroy property and food stores.
• Growing and Greening: Managing harmful plants and pests while improving plant health, contributing to the well-being of people and the quality of their urban and recreational environments. We are increasing the focus of our activities, placing Protecting Tomorrow...Today (PTT) as the driving force behind everything we do — whether it is providing technology, innovations or reducing our carbon footprint. Our products protect human health and improve the health and natural vigour of forests, parks, turf and gardens, enhancing the critical contribution these ecosystems bring in reducing harmful greenhouse gasses and pollution.

• Continuous review of human and environmental risk throughout the lifecycle of our products.
• Application of cleaner and resource-conserving manufacturing processes, following the principles of Responsible Care: Reduce (greenhouse gas emissions and freight), Recycle (packaging) and Reuse (water).
• Development of customer solutions that minimize environmental impact, using low dose active ingredients, targeted applications and Integrated Pest Management (IPM).

 3.  People and Partnerships — we are committed to developing people and partnerships to the benefit of society. We are engaged in a number of multi-stakeholder approaches, including partnerships with governmental and non-governmental organizations and international development agencies. These activities include training and developing specific Sustainable Development initiatives together with our key customers. By involving our partners in the process, we help meet our end users’ expectations, both today and tomorrow.
